Joe Popp
House of Trash
After the Florida and New York productions of MAXWELL, Joe Popp got the itch (again!)
to perform. He had recently received an audition email from actor, Josh Mertz, whom
Popp had worked with when composing music for the American Stage production of
Wiley and the Hairy Man. The email was searching for a singing truck driver to play
the part of Ray LeBlanc for the Danse Macabre Theatrics
Off-Off-Broadway production
of Trav SD's House of Trash. Josh really never had Popp in mind, but Popp replied,
"What about me?" Popp went to the audition and got the part after a reading for
director, Frank Cwiklik. In the show, Popp sang two feature numbers, "Deer Caught
in the Headlights" and "I Like to Drive My Truck", a song in which Popp shares the
stage with his gorilla companion, Claude. Popp was quoted: "It was nice to be part
of the cast instead of the guy that always yells at people to sing louder!" The
show played from July 12th - August 3rd 2002 at the Red Room, a small East Village
theater space to small but enthusiastic crowds.
